Since launch in early 2010, 8IP has built a highly-qualified investment team located in Sydney, Hong Kong and Bangalore. Our investment team is supported by a strong operations team. Information on our team members is set out below.
Kerry Series – Chief Investment Officer and Executive Director
As Chief Investment Officer, Kerry is responsible for 8IP`s investment management activity. His primary focus is on delivering investment returns through the active management of 8IP`s funds.
Kerry has advised or invested in Asia Pacific equities since 1992. He established 8IP in order to provide investors with access to differentiated Asian investment products.
Kerry`s investment experience includes a number of senior roles. In 1999 he co-founded Perennial Investment Partners which achieved strong investment performance and reached $20 billion in assets within eight years. The Asian equity fund managed by Kerry at Perennial was consistently ranked highly.
Most recently he was the Head of Asia Pacific Equities at AMP Capital where he was responsible for three investment teams which managed approximately $5 billion of assets. Kerry also spent time in Hong Kong where he was an Investment Director for HSBC Asset Management.
Kerry is a significant shareholder in 8IP and investor in 8IP funds. He has a Bachelor of Science (Economics) from Birkbeck College, University of London; is a Certified Investment Manager; and holds a UK Securities Industry Diploma.
Rick Steele – Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director
Drawing on more than 30 years in funds management and government, Rick is responsible for the business management of 8IP.
After a successful career in the Australian Treasury, Rick entered the financial markets as the Chief Economist at Prudential Assurance (Prudential). He then moved into investment management as a portfolio manager at Prudential, specialising in fixed income and foreign exchange. Rick went on to hold similar positions at BT Funds Management (BT) and Morgan Grenfell Australia.
Most recently, Rick has focused on the management of funds management businesses serving as the CEO of TechInvest, a specialist global equity manager. Prior to that he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the institutional asset management business at BT.
Rick holds a Bachelor of Economics with Honours from the University of Tasmania; a Master of Economics from the Australian National University; and is a Senior Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
Marco Giubin – Head of Investment Research
As Head of Investment Research, Marco is responsible for 8IP`s overall research effort and has sector research responsibilities. Marco has extensive experience in Asian investing, having spent 13 years in the Asian markets.
Prior to joining 8IP, Marco was Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Research at Mirae Global Investments in Hong Kong. There he was responsible for Asian equities portfolios with assets under management of US$1.4 billion.
Marco also spent seven years as an analyst with Fidelity Investments in Hong Kong where he covered a variety of sectors and was Regional Head of Consumer Research. Marco started his career in Sydney as an Analyst at UBS.
Marco has Bachelor of Business (Finance & Marketing major) from the University of Technology Sydney.
Nial Gooding
Nial has lived and worked in Asia since 1984 and lived in Hong Kong since 1992. Over a 30-year career, begun in fixed income, he has worked for a number of major financial institutions in fixed income and equity sales and sales management positions. Most recently he was Head of Equity Strategy for the Hong Kong based hedge fund Northwest Investment Management.
He has been a CFA charterholder since 2003 and presently sits on the Listing Committee of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange which oversees listing, policy and disciplinary matters relating to all Hong Kong listed companies.
Jessie Qian
Based in 8IP`s Hong Kong office, Jessie focuses on the ASEAN countries .
Prior to joining 8IP, she was Head of China Consumer Equity Research (Hong Kong) at Macquarie Securities.
Jessie started her career with Merrill Lynch as a financial modelling specialist within the Australasian Equity Research division. She later became an Associate Analyst focused on the Greater China region.
Jessie holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales and is a CFA charterholder.
Stephen Walsh – Senior Portfolio Manager
As Senior Portfolio Manager, Stephen is responsible for the Australian equity component of 8IP portfolios and is the co-portfolio manager of the 8IP Australian Small Companies Fund. Stephen has a long record of Australian equity market research.
Previously, Stephen was Head of Equities at Wilson HTM (a Deutsche Bank affiliate). There he was responsible for strategy and management of research, institutional sales and corporate finance. Earlier, Stephen was banks analyst and team leader at Macquarie Equities after a period in Singapore where he was lead Asia consumer analyst for CA Indosuez WI Carr Securities.
Stephen has a Master of Arts (History) from Cambridge University, UK and an MBA from INSEAD on a Louis Franck Scholarship.
Anshu Sharma – Portfolio Manager
As a Portfolio Manager at 8IP, Anshu is responsible for India. Anshu also covers the Technology, Internet and Media sectors across Asia.
Prior to joining 8IP, Anshu worked as an Investment Analyst at TechInvest, a specialist global equity manager. Here he was responsible for fundamental equity analysis and providing analytical support for portfolio management.
Anshu holds a Masters of Commerce in Finance from the University of New South Wales, a Bachelor of Commerce Honours from Delhi University, India and has attained the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) from the CFA Institute.
Darren Reed – Dealer
Darren is responsible for all equity and derivatives dealing at 8IP.
Darren began his career with a large New York based hedge fund before migrating to Australia. Darren was then employed by a West Australian-based broking firm where he served on the institutional desk as a sales trader and designated trading representative. Darren subsequently helped co-found a boutique corporate finance firm specialising in small and mid cap resource equities and worked with a proprietary trading firm before joining 8IP.
Darren holds a Bachelor of Economics and Law from the University of Natal in South Africa.
Andreas Faeste – Consultant, Institutional Business
As an advisor on matters relating to institutional clients, Andreas brings more than 20 years of investment management industry experience to 8IP, combining distribution-based responsibilities with experience in business planning, portfolio management and specialist advisory work.
Most recently Andreas was Head of Institutional Business at ING Investment Management Australia Ltd, where he served as a member of the Global Key Account and Global Consultant Relations committees. Prior to INGIM Andreas was the Head of Equity Distribution at JF Infrastructure and at IAG Asset Management he established the market presence of what is now Northward Capital, a specialist Australian equities funds management firm.
Andreas commenced his investment management career at Lend Lease. He then joined Westpac Investment Management, where he was responsible for the institutional business line and was portfolio manager of Westpac`s direct property and private equity investments.
Andreas` qualifications include Master of Business (Applied Finance) and Bachelor of Business, majoring in Management. Andreas is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Company Directors course.
Gary Cullen – Head of Operations
As Head of Operations for 8IP, Gary is responsible for the firm`s operations, reporting and risk analysis.
Gary started his career with Bank of Ireland, first in Dublin and later in New York, where he focused on foreign exchange and money market administration. He later moved to INVESCO Asset Management where he was involved in the development and administration of the firm`s offshore product range. Gary also spent two years with the Irish Stock Exchange as a listing adviser within the Investment Funds Listing Department.
More recently, Gary worked with JP Morgan Worldwide Securities Services where he managed a team of performance analysts and advised superannuation clients on portfolio performance and risk analysis. Just prior to joining 8IP, Gary was with AMP Capital Investors on an operational improvement project. Here, Gary led an information technology delivery team responsible for the implementation and integration of a number of investment management software systems.
Gary has a Bachelor of Business Studies and Joint Financial Services Diploma. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.
Min Yoon – Operations Manager
As the Operations Manager for 8IP, Min is responsible for the firm`s operations and reporting requirements.
Prior to joining 8IP, Min spent nine years with boutique fund of hedge funds business Coastal Capital Limited, where he was responsible for managing fund operations. Min has also worked with BNP Paribas, Trust Company and State Street in accounting roles.
Min has a Bachelor of Economics (Economics and Econometrics) from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.
Sanlam Equity Analytics, India
The Sydney-based 8IP investment team is supported by Sanlam Equity Analytics India (SEA). SEA is a highly experienced equity research analysis unit of the Sanlam group that is based in Bangalore, India.
SEA plays an integral role in 8IP`s investment process providing targeted in-depth research into industries and companies identified by 8IP as potential sources of investment opportunities.
This research provides the 8IP investment team with a sound analytical base from which to conduct further research and assess potential candidates for inclusion in the 8IP funds.
