In giving its `Recommended` rating, Zenith noted:
“We believe that the key differentiator of the Fund is freedom of the Manager to seek ideas across the region, while being free of many mandate restrictions. The risk management of the portfolio is thus not one that is based on relative performance to an index, rather it is limited to the strength of the conviction of each position within the portfolio.
We are not surprised that a concentrated portfolio that is benchmark agnostic would produce highly volatile returns and underperform the benchmark over a shorter time frame. However, we remain confident in the investment team’s ability to uncover investment opportunities that are expected to outperform over a longer time frame.”
Zenith’s report also highlights:
- The founding members of 8IP, Kerry Series in particular, have significant experience investing in Asia, using fundamental value as the starting point to build portfolios.
- We believe that the key differentiator of the Fund is freedom of the Manager to seek ideas across the region, while being free of many long only mandate restrictions.
- Zenith believes that there is considerable untapped potential in capturing upside from thoroughly understanding listed stocks that do not have sell side coverage. The deep research process at 8IP should provide plenty of opportunity to capture such returns.
